Me and My Girl
Music by Noel Gay Lyrics by Douglas Furber and L. Arthur Rose Based on the book by Douglas Furber and L. Arthur Rose
‘And we’ll have love, laughter, be happy ever after’ has to be the anthem for this joyous and extraordinary musical comedy.
Few theatrical experiences can have given as much pleasure and happiness to audiences and performers alike. A simple little tale about a male equivalent of Pygmalion’s Eliza Doolittle, Me and My Girl became one of Britain’s most successful musicals in its original run, and surpassed its success when it was revived and rewritten 50 years later. A favourite on the amateur dramatics and operatics scene, it is rarely off the stage, and several of its songs are, for good or ill, part of Britain’s national psyche.
Me & My Girl was one of the first shows to bridge the gap between two very different types of entertainment and created the dance craze of the decade with ‘The Lambeth Walk’, which was said to have been played more than the National Anthem.
