King and I

Music by Richard Rodgers Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II
Based on the book Anna and the King of Siam by Margaret Landon

The King and I was the fifth musical by the team of composer Richard Rodgers and dramatist Oscar Hammerstein II.

The show was an immediate hit, winning Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Actress (for Lawrence) and Best Featured Actor.

Set against a dazzling and exotic backdrop, The King and I is the moving story of Anna an American governess who tries to help an Eastern king to come to terms with the modern world but he is unable to resist the forces of ancient customs.

The conflict between Eastern and Western cultures inspired this well-loved musical.

The show has been revived professionally many times and is always a firm favourite with the public. The score includes I Whistle A Happy Tune, Hello Young Lovers, Getting To Know You, Something Wonderful and Shall We Dance?

Review

A spectacular production, holding the audience fast in their seats from the first moment until the last. Something for everyone of all ages to enjoy, including humour, amazing costumes and dance. Wonderful performances from every member of the cast, but the portrayal of lead characters Anna and the King were outstanding. This show is a must see for all theatre-lovers – Isle of Man Today
